IPMS St. John’s NL wants to wish Club members and model builders world wide a very Merry Christmas season and hopes for a very Happy New Year.
We have seen our Club grow this year in numbers and interest. We have also seen some fabulous work created and shown at our meetings and shared by friends of the Club on our Facebook page. Thanks for all the conversations and photos. We hope to see even more in the new year.
I hope Santa is very good to everyone, I hope there is a lot of plastic in his bag, and I hope the downtime from work over the holidays allows for some extra build time.
Stay safe, be happy, and keep building!!!!!
See you next year!
Joe

IPMS St. John's 2015 Model Show and Competition
IPMS St. John's would like to thank everyone who attended and competed in the 2015 Model Show and Competition on Sunday Oct 25, to make it one of the most successful shows in recent years.
The quality of work was great and it shows the amount effort put into the kits. It is also great to see the interest in the hobby in our area. It was commented on more than once that it was great to see so many younger folks taking up the hobby, we had more Juniors in attendance and competing than ever before. It was also very encouraging to see the amount of entries in the contest triple overall from last year!
Thanks go out to Club members who hosted the public and acted as ambassadors of the club. There were many stories, pieces of advice, and hints and tips shared. Great job everyone!
I would like to thank our local hobby shop - Signal Hobbies - for their support of the show and helping in spread the word. We are grateful to them for supplying Best in Show prize. Thanks Fred and Aune. It was great to see you at the show.
Thanks to Club members and the many Friends of the Club for sharing on their social media to spread the word wider than ever before.
It was a great show, we are proud to help the modeling community come together for a day of sharing all of the projects and related stories. We had people come from as far away as Grand Falls (4.5 hrs drive) and Carbonear (1.5 Hrs) just to be at the show. So glad you could share your work with all of us.
Our Club always welcomes new members no matter what skill level, what age or model interest. If you would like more information about the Club, please email us at ipms.sj@gmail.com
Until next year - Keep Building!!!!

Sept 8 2015 Meeting Summary
The September meeting is our annual Swap Night, and this year, to recognize the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, we also had a Battle of Britain theme night.
In attendance: Rob, Chris J, Bert, Randy, Mark, Mike, Steve R, Steve F, Dave, Tony, Rodney, Joe
See Photo Album at the following link, let me know if you cant see it.
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.753437374779817.1073741865.319507198172839&type=3
Steve F – Battle of Britain assortment
Steve started numbering his kits on the underside of the rear stabilizer years after he started. Even still he is up past 725 to date, and usually build more than 12 a year.
This is a selection of his true BoB kits from both sides of the Channel. Can you recognize anything that is not a Spit or Hurricane? Leave a message in the comments.
Chris – New Meng-Model Land Cruiser with aftermarket BMP turret
Chris has been focusing on equipment examples from the Syrian conflict lately, they are popular subjects in the model industry worldwide these day. Another fabulous job especially on the weathering! I wouldn’t be surprised to see this in one of the more popular model magazines soon.
Joe - Staghound in progress
I am slowly making progress with my Staghound, but took some time to figure out how to get the baskets the Manitoba Dragoons used for stowage on the side of the armored car, instead of the fuel tank. I had the brass rod, but didn’t know what to do about the mesh. I finally landed on Aber S08 diagonal mesh from eBay. I think it looks just fine. The CA glue was not working that well, I could not handle the frame robustly to fit the mesh, so it is also my first attempt at soldering photo etch. Not as easy as it looks!
What you don’t see on the tables is a picture of my 303 Sdn Hurricane from Battle of Britain. I forgot to take a picture of it that night, but included a light box shot from home. Piloted by Canadian Johnny Kent, he was Flt Lt with the Polish 303 Sdn in Sept 1940.
Bert – Arifx order
It was good to see Bert after an absence. He has an activity that conflicts with our meeting time, but in the spirit of Battle of Britain, Bert brought in his recently received order of BoB examples from Airfix. The new owners of Airfix have certainly invigorated the modeling tastes of folks who loved these kits in the past. With all new tooling, based on laser capture of dimensions, plus a subtle touch to detail, are producing some very fine kits. A side note, I have the new A5125 Spitfire Vb, and peeked in the box, WOW – I am going to hit that soon..
Steve F- Photo collection
Steve share with us photos of Military in St. John’s from the first part of the century. Steve’s Grandfather was an officer with the (Royal) Newfoundland Regiment in the Great War, and a public figure during the second. Amazing to see some of the name from our history books there.
Steve also showed an in progress shot of a Spitfire Mk I from the fictitious Royal Newfoundland Air Force at the time of the Battle of Britain.
Bruce
I also had an email from Bruce out in Central Nfld, a close follower of the club for years. He shared his diorama of a Battle of Britain air combat scene. Stunning!
Swap Night selection
It was a good swap night, lots of selection and lots of new owners produced. Some of this stuff is still left if members who couldn’t make it are interested. Otherwise you will probably see this stuff and more at the Swap Table at the Show on Oct 25, at the Remax Center (St. John’s Curling Club).
That’s it for this month folks, see you next month!

IPMS St. John's Completes Commission for Logy Bay Middle Cove Outer Cove Museum
We delivered a commission today for the Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove Museum.
Museum Coordinator Katie Harvey gathers personal memories from people of the community. One such story was that of a plane hitting the house of Richard and Kitty Stack in 1956.
On Jan 9, 1956 Col Carl Payne, Director of Operations for North East Air Command (NEAC) of the US Air Force at Pepperrell AFB, tragically crashed immediately after takeoff from Torbay Airport, hitting the Stack house. His aircraft then skidded across a field and his remains, and the remains of his aircraft, went over a cliff to the beach and water below.
Col Payne Tribute
http://www.veterantributes.org/TributeDetail.php…
The story and fate of Col Payne appeared in print earlier this year in The Telegram in an article by retired photojournalist Gary Hebbard (garyhebbard1@gmail.com). Gary followed this story in pursuit of his passion as an aviation writer and researcher.
His article appears in two parts in the links below.
http://www.thetelegram.com/…/article…/The-day-the-sky-fell/1
http://www.thetelegram.com/…/article-41…/Crash,-boom,-fire/1
The Museum, which has many interesting exhibits, is building a display remembering Col Carl Payne. This display includes newspaper articles about the crash, uniforms of the USAF from the period, and will also include details of the crash accompanied by photos and stories from the people in the community that witnessed it.
Gary, a friend of the Club, put the Museum in touch with IPMS St. John’s.
The T-33 Shooting Star (T-Bird), built by Tony from our club, will be a central piece of that display.
The kit is the Academy 1/48 scale kit and is painted to represent Col Payne’s aircraft (Bu 53-5134), as it was in 1956, based on best research available to us.
The Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove Museum will be revealing the Col Carl Payne exhibit at the Museum (744 Logy Bay Road) on September 5.

We lost a giant in our hobby
Sheperd Paine, a giant in the modeling and historical miniatures
world passed away Saturday.
Like many of you, I was influenced by Shep Paine and his
diorama sheets in the Monogram kits (armour for me J) and his books on “How to Build
Dioramas”.
The text I put on our Facebook page about his life is in this
link from Finescale Modeler.
Gone but certainly not forgotten….
September Meeting - upcoming events
Our September meeting will include a SWAP NIGHT, like we usually do every September. Please bring your previously loved kits and other related paraphernalia for sale or swap.
Also, this year is the 75th Anniversary of the BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
In observance of an early Battle of Britain Day, I would like everyone attending to bring along a Battle of Britain memento.
It could be a completed kit (Spit, Hurricane, Me 109/110, He 111, Ju 88, Do 17, etc..), uncompleted kit, a book, a keepsake handed down, a car or motorcycle from the period. It could be a Diorama (Andy??? – Mr. People’s Choice winner from Show 2013).
Steve F. - I am a fan of the Boulton Paul Defiant – Do you have one of those in you 730+ kits????
Our meeting is Tuesday September 8, 2015.
More information to come, but get it ready to bring!!!

Meeting Summary May 5, 2013
In attendance tonight: Tony, Dave, Randy, Rob, Craig , Steve R, Steve F, Dennis, Joe
Welcome to Craig tonight, his first visit. Lots of discussion and he brought some cool things to look at and talk about!
Eggplanes!
Unfortunately everyone did not get their plans done in time for this meeting, so we postponed judging for a month. See you June 2!!!!!!!! GET BUILDING !!! :)
We did have a few examples, kudos to Tracy, Rodney joe, and Gary for his almost completed but then gravity and a paint mishap happened, fixable Gary..
Randy brought in the Academy F-18A hornet with Canadian marking. He wouldn’t sell it.
Rob Brought in his Mayflower kit for the ship guys to see.
Just an observation, Gary is the only regular car guy in the group. He cant build fast enough to have something to show every week. We need some new car guys to show us their stuff, and perhaps Gary wont be so lonely :)
See you next month folks.

Steve F
His own versions of Eggplane from real life – GB Racer and X85 Goblin. Goblin was a great design, except they didn’t consider how to land it!

Craig
Craig joined us for the first time. He brought in a bunch of kits and a WIP Diorama, plus his Vallejo paint set. I wish I had one of them!

Joe
Taking a page from Steve F theme kits, Joe brought in two Corsairs built years ago to depict VMF-214 Blacksheep with Pappy Boyington, and the Blacksheep next tour in early 1945 aboard the carrier USS Franklin. New is an F4F-4 wildcat just built to represent VMF 214 initial tours, before the Blacksheep “stole” their number. Tours started in Feb 1943 and ended in Aug 1943. The Wildcat version of VMF-214 were actually called the Swashbucklers. But that changed, didn’t it.
Another shot of the Friul metal tracks for the Jagdpather. These are weathered using AK Burnishing Fluid. One was done as links and then assembled, the other track was assembled and the burnished. Can you tell where the thin CA glue ran on the pre-assembled track? Moral of the story? Burnish individual links, THEN assemble.
