About the club

We are a group of people who enjoy the hobby of plastic model building. Our members interests range from Aircraft, Automobiles, Ships, Figures, Armour, to Sci Fi. We have all skill levels from beginners to some pretty talented modellers, but we mainly meet to share our work, ideas, tips and techniques, and talk about modelling in general. Meeting Summary January 14, 2014

The January meeting of the IPMS St. John’s Plastic Model Club was held last night.

In attendance we had Steve F, Steve R, Tony, Chris, Andy, Gary, Mike, and Dave.

First off!!!
There was approval from the members attending to pursue The IPMS St. John’s 2014 Plastic Model Show  in October 2014.

Yes! We are starting planning on a show immediately, to be held in Oct. Date and location to be announced when confirmed.

So start pick out your kit, and get building!! And to quote Dave, “you need a base and a figure to really show it off!”

We are also going to start planning on a Club day for members only and we are looking at early June for that, more to come.

Speaking of Dave, he was elected to the position of club Vice-President for 2014. Congrats Dave and welcome aboard.

And the last piece of business, thank you all for remembering to pay your dues. J

The modeling portion of the evening brought out a number of kits by our members along with some interesting model related material.

Steve F. brought in three 1930’s period fighter aircraft. Steve was on a kick to paint yellow wing aircraft, and he finished his 707th model, the Brewster Buffalo, from VF-2 USS Lexington. That reminded him of another yellow wing he did, an early version of the F4 Wildcat, his #82 model. And that begot another Buffalo he had, but he says it is slightly larger than the other buffalo, so if has to be a bigger scale.

Steve also brought in his Mosquito kit, after seeing mine last month. Using references he was able to point out inaccuracies with the kit, especially the oversized tail, but countered that with a reference that stated the 1968 Mosquito is the best example of this aircraft to date J. Steve’s kit is of 1978 vintage, while mine, still using the same sprues from 1968, was manufactured in 2012.

Chris brought in his completed M-42 Duster AA (Anti Aircraft). This is one of nine superb models that Chris has complete in 2013. His attention to detail and the detailed weathering is outstanding.

Andy brought in his complete RAF Chinook Helicopter.  Andy is former RAF himself and we always ask a lot of questions about his time in the service. He was an airframe painter; he would paint the camouflage and all other details on the aircraft exterior. He has personally worked on RAF Chinooks before, so he has a wealth of knowledge on painting trivia, and is his own personal reference (and now ours) when it comes to modern RAF camo patterns and markings.

Tony brought in his latest acquisition to show us, a Volkswagon van. It is done up in the Jagermeister commercial colors. My attachment to Jagermeister goes back to my early 80’s experience in the Canadian Army in Germany. Jagermeister is a potent after supper liqueur, well..  anytime really J

December Meeting Summary

The last meeting of the year is usually our Election of officers.
This year the President, Secretary and Treasurer volunteered to stay on and the Vice President  wanted to step down.

Acting on a motion from the floor, the quorum voted unanimously to retain the the willing incumbents, however we deferred the election of the Vice President until January in the hopes we would get some members willing to accept the nomination.

We have a few more kits on the table this month to look at.

Steve F brought in a collection of 1936 era fighters with a "What-If" scenario of what would have been the stage for WWII starting in 1936 in terms of Fighter Aircraft, instead of Spitfires, Hurricanes and ME-109s. I believe the closest one is a Hawker Fury (precursor to the Hurricane) in 48th and 72 scale examples. While the others are the Heinkel He 51, Arado 68, and top right I think is Morane-Saulnier M.S. 225.

Chris brought in two completed works, part of his 9 for the year. A Leopard 1, and his first crack at WWII Russian, an IS-2.

Tony brought in two in-progress aircraft. A 727 airliner and a Russian Bear.

And Lastly, I brought in my completed DeHaviland Mosquito - RCAF 418 Sqn example, the Revell kit. Practice for the Tamiya kit I have.

So that brings 2013 to a close, see you in 2014!

In our January meeting we will be discussing the possibility of a model show for Oct 2014. Chances are very good that we will be able to announce that in the next few weeks, to give you lots of time to start a build or two just for the show!

Stay tuned!!

Happy New Year!!!
